Changes in Ivory Figurines

Alaskan Eskimo ivory figurines have changed over time. Traditional ivory figurines, made before European contact, were extremely small and portable. They were relatively simple with minimal decoration. Their functions usually as tools, amulets or clothing decorations, or toys.

With increased outside contact, meanings and functions of ivory carvings changed. Carvings became trade commodities rather than objects with religious or magical value.. As trade increased, carvings were made in mass quantities for sale to outsiders and many figurines were similar in design. Carvings also increased in size, many became "table-top" displays rather than small portable items.

However, many contemporary ivory figurines stayed small in size due to the necessity of working with the size and shape of walrus tusks.
